Thanks to [info]tarigwaemir, [info]derien, [info]eor, [info]hokutonpunch and [info]daegaer for the Hogswatchnight/new Gregorian year cards! I am gazing at them now, delighting in their variegated prettiness.

Am back in London. It is VERY COLD, but I've just made myself coffee and smoked salmon over scrambled eggs on toast -- the eggs are not a uniform yellow and the toast is burnt, but I have slathered on tonnes of butter and it tastes amazing. And have you noticed that coffee smells different on a cold day? It smells even more magical, is how it smells. What I'm trying to say is: there are compensations.

    Resolutions
Thank you for the tips on how to, um, mumble mumble -- look, perfectly lawful Goodyear blimp!

Assessment of last year's resolutions )

    New Year's Resolutions for 2008:
    1) Wear my tutu in public.
    2) Stick to my weekly write day.
    3) Be nicer to Cephas.

Hmm. I think that is fine. Otherwise I am absurdly pleased with myself and where I am in my life, and the only things which genuinely annoy me are beyond my controlling anyway.

Great news to usher in the New Year: that's Sir Terry Pratchett to you! Yay!

ETA: apropos of nothing, would you be annoyed or pleased if somebody told you you reminded them of Stephen Maturin? I would be enormously flattered, but I am sort of biased, on account of his being my favourite fictional character in the whole history of ever.

    Things on the Internet
The seven pages of comments suggest that linking comes a little late, but if you haven't read it yet, [info]linabean put together a found poem from posts on [info]sgastoryfinders. You don't need to be familiar with SGA to read this, though a knowledge of fandom is necessary. It is oddly beautiful and touching!

Via TransGriot, a couple of documentaries on being transgender:

She's My Son, short film by local Indrani Kopal. Malay with English subtitles. There's also an article from the Star about the film here.

BBC documentary about teen transsexuals. The narrator/filmmaker made me bare my teeth quite a lot, but it's still worth a watch, I think; it's interesting for how the parents deal and for the kids themselves.

I've been reading True Body Confessions compulsively for the past half hour and it is so horribly depressing. (Potentially triggery if you are sensitive about body image, eating disorders, etc. Exercise caution!) It just drives in what a drain the effort of struggling towards the ideal of beauty is on women's time, energy, emotion, brainspace; what a waste, what a tragic waste.

ETA: I forgot to ask in my gloomy ponderins -- does anyone know where Merlin episodes might be found? I should like to start watching it, but don't have a TV in England.

    A handful of Yuletide recs
to hell with anything unrefined, Archy and Mehitabel. A delightful series of vers libre by the poet Archy on the subject of the suffragists. With pictures!

The Ballad of Penny Peabody, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

It comes to her like a flash of lightning thirty seconds before she walks on to the stage with him that Captain Hammer is a total and complete waste of time. He's all hair, ass and, er, hammer. She always does this too, always goes for the guy who she thinks is going to be her protector, who will look after her. And it's not like she needs looking after right? She works at a homeless shelter with some pretty scary guys sometimes. She realizes that in future she needs to remember doesn't have to be weak to be loved.

Love and Marriage, Mansfield Park. AU: a sharp, heartbreaking picture of what might have happened if Fanny had married Crawford and Edmund, Mary.

That's a Good Look on You, Flight of the Conchords. Bret and Jemaine perform at a gay club.
